Course Descriptions for Band Classes

Below are brief descriptions of each performing ensemble and the events they participate in.

Classes for Credit

Symphonic Wind Ensemble/Marching:     SWE Home Page     LISTEN TO SWE

Course Number: MU-700-1
GT Course Number: MU-800-1
Application and Director approval are required for enrollment in GT.
This is the top level (varsity) band at MRHS.  Entrance into this class is by audition only.  This group performs only the most challenging literature written for band.  This group also forms the Marching Unit, which runs from August to November.  The ensemble performs at all home varsity football games, competative marching shows, Winter Concert, Spring Concert, Spring Trip, County Adjudication, and other special events.  There will be rehearsal and performance commitments outside of the school day.  Students must be available for Marching Band Camp which runs in mid-August.  New marchers and section leaders must be available for a mini-camp in mid-August.  Athletes involved in Fall Sports will split their time between athletic practice and band camp.  Students can do both band and athletics without major complications.  Each student is expected to attend one sectional a week during the school year.  Private instruction is highly recommended for students in this ensemble and is required for GT students.
All students in this ensemble are required to participate in marching band.  The only exception is for junior and senior double reed players. Although I strongly encourage participation in marching band for double reed players, it is understandable that giving up playing your primary instrument in light of other performance considerations such as All-State and college auditions could be problematic.  If you are asking for an exception please be sure you have a compelling reason.  If it is decided that you are exempt from marching band then you must complete an intensive independent performance project during the first marking period.

Concert Band:     CB Home Page          LISTEN TO CB

Course Number: MU-400-1
This is the intermediate (junior varsity) level band at MRHS.  Entrance into this class is by audition only.  This group performs intermediate to advanced level literature written for band.  The ensemble performs at the Winter Concert, Spring Concert, Spring Trip, County Adjudication, and other special events.  There will be rehearsal and performance commitments outside of the school day which are mandatory and part of students’ grades.  Private instruction is recommended for students in this ensemble.

Percussion Ensemble:

Course Number: MU-480-1
This class is for percussionists in Concert Band and any student that wants a percussion experience. All percussionists should enrole in Percussion Ensemble class UNLESS you are in the Wind Ensemble. This group performs percussion ensemble literature and also performs with the Concert Band as the percussion section.  The focus of this class is to build percussion skills on all instruments of the percussion family.  There will be rehearsal and performance commitments outside of the school day. Students in this class also have the option of participating in the Marching Band. I strongly encourage all percussionists to opt into marching band. You will be learning a unique skill set which will allow you to advance more quickly through the percussion program.

MRHS Jazz Ensemble Class        Jazz Home Page          LISTEN TO COMBO
